    ## Who can get it

    - The surviving spouse receives the $255 payment if they were living with the deceased or already receiving benefits on the deceased's record. - If there is no eligible spouse, an eligible child who was receiving benefits on the deceased's record at the time of death may receive it. - Apply within 2 years of the worker's death by calling SSA at 1-800-772-1213. - This is separate from ongoing monthly survivor benefits. Apply for both if you may qualify.

    ## A note on the amount

The $255 amount has not been adjusted since 1954 and was never meant to cover the full cost of a funeral.
