    Common questions

Federal programs like SSDI, Medicare, and VA disability follow the same rules everywhere. State programs like Medicaid, SNAP, housing help, and energy assistance are run by each state with their own income limits, application rules, and benefit amounts. Two neighbors in different states can qualify for very different help.

The most overlooked state benefits are utility and energy assistance (LIHEAP), state-level prescription savings, property tax relief for seniors and veterans, free or reduced phone and internet through Lifeline, child care assistance, and state supplemental payments that add to federal SSI. Most are first-come, first-served.

Start with our state resource pages, which list the major programs, income limits, official application links, and contact numbers for each state. Then check 211, your state's official benefits portal, and your local Area Agency on Aging or Community Action Agency for less-advertised local help.

Yes. Most states offer extra veteran benefits on top of federal VA programs: property tax exemptions, free or discounted hunting and fishing licenses, license plate fee waivers, in-state tuition, hiring preferences, and state veterans homes. Benefits often scale with your VA disability rating.

Federal benefits move with you. State benefits usually require you to apply again in your new state and may have residency waiting periods, often 30 days for emergency programs and longer for others. Apply quickly after a move so you do not have a gap in coverage.

Sometimes. SSI recipients automatically qualify for Medicaid in most states. SSDI does not, and you usually wait two years for Medicare. SNAP, housing, and energy help count some federal benefits as income but exclude others. The rules are state-specific, which is why our state pages spell them out.
