VA Health Chat Lets Veterans Refill Prescriptions, Schedule Care Without a Trip

For many Veterans, getting care through the Department of Veterans Affairs can mean more than the appointment itself. There may be a long drive, parking, time away from work or family, and time spent waiting or navigating a large VA facility.
A VA tool that has expanded nationwide could make some of those routine health care tasks much easier.
VA Health Chat lets eligible Veterans communicate with VA staff through secure, real-time text messaging from a phone, tablet or computer. Depending on what is available through a Veteran’s local VA network, the service can be used to ask about non-life-threatening health concerns, request prescription refills, schedule appointments and get help navigating other care needs.
For Veterans who live far from a VA facility — or simply do not want to make an unnecessary trip — that can add up to meaningful time savings.
One Veteran says it saves him hours
VA News recently highlighted Army Veteran Evan Burnside, a new father who faces roughly a three-hour commitment when he needs to visit his nearest VA facility. The trip includes about an hour of driving each way, plus parking and time spent getting around the facility.
Burnside told VA News that VA Health Chat has allowed him to handle some of his care without making that trip.
He first began using the service after moving to a new state and found it particularly useful for getting prescription refills. In another case, he used the Scheduling and Administration chat channel when he needed specialty care. A VA staff member contacted his primary care provider, who then authorized the care he needed without requiring Burnside to make an additional visit first.
For Veterans with transportation challenges, rural Veterans, caregivers, parents and anyone who lives a significant distance from VA care, that kind of virtual access may be worth knowing about.

What can Veterans use VA Health Chat for?
VA says Health Chat can connect Veterans with different types of VA staff depending on their needs, including nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians and schedulers.
Available channels can include:
- Clinical Triage, for questions about non-life-threatening health concerns.
- Pharmacy Support, including prescription refill or medication questions.
- Scheduling and Administration, for appointments and other administrative needs.
- Virtual Clinic Visit or Urgent Care, where available, for medical advice about issues that may need prompt attention but are not emergencies.
Not every channel is available everywhere. VA says Health Chat is available to Veterans nationwide, including in U.S. territories, but the services a Veteran sees after signing in depend on the Veterans Integrated Service Network, or VISN, serving their area.
That distinction matters. A Veteran may have access to the app but not every function listed above.
Who can use VA Health Chat?
According to VA’s current Health Chat guidance, Veterans generally need to be actively enrolled in VA health care and have an ID.me or Login.gov account that can be used to sign in securely. An internet connection is also required.
Veterans can access VA Health Chat through a web browser or supported mobile options. Once signed in, the app displays the chat channels currently available to that Veteran.
Hours also depend on location. VA says that in most locations, staff are available Monday through Friday, generally around 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time, excluding federal holidays. Some locations offer expanded hours, so Veterans should check what appears in their own account rather than assume a particular channel will be open.
Health Chat is not a replacement for emergency care
VA Health Chat is designed for non-life-threatening medical issues and routine health care needs. It should not be treated as an emergency service.
Veterans experiencing a medical emergency should call 911 or seek appropriate emergency care. Veterans in crisis can call 988 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line, text 838255 or use the Veterans Crisis Line’s confidential online chat.
For less urgent situations, however, Health Chat may help a Veteran figure out what to do next without starting with a drive to a VA facility.
How to check whether it can help you
If you are enrolled in VA health care, the simplest way to see what is available is to sign in to VA Health Chat. The system will show the channels available for your location.
It may be especially useful to check the service before making a trip for something that could potentially be handled remotely — such as a prescription question, appointment request or minor health concern.
That does not mean every issue can be resolved through chat. A provider may still determine that an in-person visit, examination, test or other follow-up is necessary.
But Burnside’s experience shows why it may be worth checking the app before getting in the car. Sometimes the first step toward getting the care you need can happen from home.
And for a Veteran who would otherwise spend hours getting to and from a VA facility, avoiding even one unnecessary trip can make a difference.
