Supplemental Security Income payments are not taxable. You do not list SSI as income on your federal tax return.

    Official source: irs.gov

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is money from the government. It helps people who are aged, blind, or have a disability. It also helps people who have little or no money or things of value. SSI is not the same as Social Security. Social Security benefits can be taxed. SSI payments are never taxed. You do not need to report SSI as income when you do your federal taxes.

This matters because you can keep all of your SSI money. You do not have to pay a part of it to the government for taxes. This can be very helpful if you have a low income. It makes sure you get the full amount of help you need.

To learn more about SSI, you can visit the Social Security Administration website. You can also call them or visit a local office. They can tell you if you can get SSI or if you are already getting it.

    In real life

    • A person who received only SSI did not need to report it on their tax return.
    • Sarah gets SSI each month. She doesn't have to pay taxes on that money.
    • John only gets SSI to help with his bills. He won't owe federal income tax because of it.
