Step 1: Set Up Digital Verification Before Shopping

Physical cards still work in some places, but more retailers now rely on three verification services: ID.me, SheerID, and GovX. You upload proof of service once, then use that verification to unlock discounts at participating brands. For example, Lowe's uses ID.me and ties your 10% discount to a free MyLowe's Rewards account.

For in-person shopping, you will generally still need one of the following:

    • A DoD Identification Card (CAC, retiree, or dependent card)
    • A Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
    • A state driver's license or ID with a Veteran designation

Store policies vary widely. Some brands accept an ID at the register, while others require app-based verification. Spouse and dependent eligibility also varies by company.

The Biggest Wins, Ranked by Real Financial Value

    1. Free Federal Lands Access

Who it covers: Active-duty service members and their dependents, veterans, and Gold Star families.

The benefit: Free entrance to national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests, and other federal recreation sites. Veterans and Gold Star families receive a Lifetime Pass, while active-duty members and dependents receive an Annual Pass (available digitally through Recreation.gov).

The catch: The pass covers the pass holder and passengers in a private vehicle, or the holder plus up to three adults at per-person fee sites. It covers basic entrance and standard day-use fees only. Expanded amenity fees such as camping, transportation, and reservations are not included.

    2. Home Improvement Chains

Lowe's: 10% off eligible items, with no published annual spending cap as of this writing. Exclusions typically include major appliances, installation services, gift cards, sale or clearance items, and certain building commodities like lumber and wire. PRO accounts are ineligible, so you must use a personal account.

The Home Depot: A similar 10% discount, but savings are capped at $400 per calendar year (roughly the first $4,000 you spend).

The verdict: For routine purchases the two are roughly a wash, so shop wherever the base price is better. For a large renovation, Lowe's is usually the safer choice because you won't hit Home Depot's cap. Ace Hardware policies are set by individual store owners, so check locally.

    3. Travel Perks

Airlines: Don't spend your time hunting for discounted fares. Military fares are uncommon and often carry restrictions. The real value is in baggage waivers. American Airlines, for instance, allows up to five free checked bags (up to 100 lbs each) for active-duty members and dependents traveling on orders, and up to three 50-lb bags for personal travel. Policies differ by airline, and dependent coverage varies.

TSA PreCheck: Free for eligible DoD ID cardholders, including active-duty members. Enter your DoD ID number as your Known Traveler Number when booking.

Trains: Amtrak offers 10% off the lowest available fare for active-duty personnel, spouses, and dependents, as well as veterans with valid proof of status. It does not apply to sleeping accommodations and may not combine with other offers.

Car rentals and hotels: Major rental agencies and hotel chains offer government or military rates. Always compare them against standard public rates and loyalty rates, because the military rate is not always the lowest price on the screen.

    4. Federal Financial Protections (SCRA and MLA)

These are rights established by law, not corporate favors, and they can be among the most valuable financial benefits available to service members.

SCRA (Servicemembers Civil Relief Act): Caps interest at 6% on debts you took on before entering active duty, including credit cards, auto loans, and mortgages. It is not automatic. You generally need to request the lower rate in writing and include a copy of your orders.

MLA (Military Lending Act): Caps the Military Annual Percentage Rate at 36% on most consumer credit for covered active-duty members and dependents. It excludes most mortgages and purchase-money auto loans, so it will not cover a typical car loan.

Separately, some card issuers, such as American Express, have waived annual fees for covered active-duty members as a company policy. Ask your issuer what it offers.

    5. Wireless and Cell Plans

Major carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T have run military discounts, but terms vary by plan and change often. Some offers have required a paid WeSalute+ subscription. Before switching to a dedicated military plan, compare the total bill against a low-cost prepaid plan. A budget carrier is sometimes cheaper than a discounted major-network plan.

    Everyday Shopping, Dining, and Fitness

Retail: Roughly 10% is a common baseline at apparel and shoe brands such as Nike and Under Armour, though some brands go higher. You usually need to verify through ID.me or SheerID first to get an online promo code.

Restaurants: Many dining discounts are decided by local franchise owners, though some chains set policy corporately. Ask before you order, and don't assume every location of a national chain participates.

Theme parks and attractions: Before you buy at the front gate, check your local installation's ITT (Information, Tickets and Travel) or MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) office. It is often the cheapest way to buy Disney, Universal, or regional park tickets, but compare prices because programs change every year.

Gyms: Chains such as Gold's Gym, Anytime Fitness, and the YMCA sometimes waive enrollment fees or discount monthly dues, but individual locations set their own rules.

Is WeSalute+ Worth the Paid Subscription?

WeSalute (formerly Veterans Advantage) has two tiers.

Basic (free): Gives you access to public, non-exclusive military discounts, many of which you can find elsewhere.

WeSalute+ (paid): Listed at $4.95 for a 30-day trial, $9.99 per month, or $59.95 for the first 12 months. Renewal pricing may differ. It unlocks exclusive deals, a physical ID card, discounted travel protection, and travel perks.

Bottom line: Pay for WeSalute+ only if you have confirmed that a specific airline or car rental deal you plan to use is exclusive to the platform. For everyday retail shopping, free verification through ID.me, SheerID, or GovX covers most of what you need.

Holiday Specials: Veterans Day and Memorial Day

Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11, 2026) is the biggest day of the year for military offers. Historically, restaurants such as Applebee's, Chili's, Texas Roadhouse, and Olive Garden have offered free meals or select menu items to veterans and active-duty members. Golden Corral often runs its own military appreciation event, which may not fall on November 11.

Memorial Day (the last Monday in May) is more often a retail occasion, when some brands temporarily raise their standard military discount. Memorial Day honors those who died in service, so many restaurants focus their military offers on Veterans Day instead.

Holiday dining tips: Offers vary by year and location. Many are dine-in only, require proof of service, and apply to a limited menu. Call ahead to confirm your local restaurant is participating, and avoid peak hours if you can.

    The Pre-Purchase Checklist

Before making a large purchase, run through these six checks:

    1. Verification: Is your ID.me, SheerID, or GovX account linked to your store profile?
    2. Exclusions: Does the discount exclude the item category you're buying, such as major appliances or lumber?
    3. Caps: Is there an annual limit on how much you can save?
    4. Stacking: Can you combine the military discount with sales or rewards? Often you cannot.
    5. Franchise rules: Is this a corporate policy or left to local discretion?
    6. Comparison: Is there an undiscounted competitor or public sale price that is cheaper overall?
