How the 2027 COLA is applied to your benefit

The 2027 cost-of-living adjustment is 3.6%. To apply it, multiply your current monthly benefit by 3.6% (0.036). That gives your monthly raise. Add the raise to your current benefit to get your new monthly amount.

To see the yearly difference, multiply the monthly raise by 12.

A worked example: a monthly benefit of $1,000 times 3.6% is a raise of $36.00. The new monthly amount is $1,036.00. Over a year, that is $432.00 more.

The same 3.6% applies to Social Security benefits and to SSI. Medicare Part B premiums are not subtracted here. If your premium comes out of your check, the amount deposited may be lower. Your SSA COLA notice shows your exact new amount.

    When you'll see the increase

Social Security: the 3.6% COLA starts with December 2026 benefits. Those benefits are paid in January 2027, so January 2027 is the first payment that includes the raise.

SSI: the raise starts with the January 2027 payment. Because January 1 is a holiday, that payment arrives at the end of December 2026.

The 2027 COLA comes from the Social Security Administration's latest cost-of-living adjustment page. Your SSA COLA notice shows your exact new amount.
