Bipolar disorder is evaluated under Blue Book Listing 12.04. You can qualify by meeting that listing, or through SSA's Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) assessment instead.

    Bipolar Disorder & SSDI/SSI Eligibility

If bipolar disorder has made it impossible to hold down steady work, you may be dealing with a condition the SSA recognizes and evaluates regularly. Bipolar disorder is a well-established impairment under SSA's rules, and mood disorders make up a meaningful share of approved mental health disability claims.

Approval always comes down to the medical evidence and functional limitations in your specific file, not the diagnosis alone.

This guide breaks down exactly how the government evaluates bipolar disorder.

    Quick answer

Bipolar disorder falls under Listing 12.04 (Depressive, Bipolar, and Related Disorders). You can qualify by meeting that listing's criteria, or by showing through your Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) that your symptoms make sustained full-time work unrealistic.

Many approved bipolar disorder claims are based on the RFC path rather than meeting Listing 12.04 outright. It's not on the Compassionate Allowances list, so there's no fast-track, but it's a frequently approved basis for both SSDI and SSI.

SSDI vs. SSI for bipolar disorder

The medical rules to prove you have a disability are the same for both programs. The only difference is how you qualify financially:

    ·       SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance): Based on your work history. You must have paid into the system through paycheck taxes during your working years.

    ·       SSI (Supplemental Security Income): Based on financial need. It requires no work history, but your household income and savings must be very low. In 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $994 a month.

You can file for both at once if you meet both sets of rules. Which one (or both) applies to you affects paperwork and payment structure, not your medical odds.

    Path A: Meeting Listing 12.04

The SSA uses a medical manual called the "Blue Book" to evaluate severe illnesses. To qualify under the official bipolar disorder listing, your records must prove two things: your medical history (Paragraph A) and your daily limitations (Paragraph B).

Medical documentation (Paragraph A):Your doctor's notes must show a documented history of both manic episodes (periods of abnormally high energy, rapid speech, racing thoughts, or low sleep) and depressive episodes (deep sadness, loss of energy, or trouble concentrating).

Functional limitations (Paragraph B):This is where most claims succeed or fail. Your mental health must cause a marked (severe) limitation in at least two of these areas, or an extreme (total) limitation in one:

    ·       Learning and remembering: Trouble following basic instructions or learning new job tasks.

    ·       Interacting with others: Struggles with social communication, managing irritability, or getting along with bosses and coworkers.

    ·       Focus and pace: Inability to stay on task or finish projects in a normal amount of time.

    ·       Managing yourself: Overwhelming trouble regulating your emotions, maintaining personal hygiene, or handling changes.

Path B: Qualifying through your Functional Limits (RFC)

Many people with bipolar disorder don't perfectly match every item on the checklist, but still win their cases through a Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) assessment: an evaluation of what you can realistically do across a standard 40-hour workweek.

SSA looks closely at reliability. If your mood episodes cause you to miss two or more days of work per month regularly, or you're off-task more than 15% of the workday, SSA generally considers you unemployable in the competitive job market.

What Evidence Does the Government Look For?

The SSA builds a timeline of your illness using concrete documentation. A strong file should include:

    ·       Detailed notes from your psychiatrist, psychologist, or therapist.

    ·       Records of any psychiatric hospitalizations or emergency room visits.

    ·       A clear log of the medications you have tried and how you reacted to them.

    ·       Statements from family, friends, or past coworkers describing how your condition affects you.

    What About Medication Side Effects?

Mood stabilizers and antipsychotics can cause heavy side effects like extreme drowsiness, tremors, or cognitive fog. These count as evidence. If your medication makes you too sleepy or dizzy to work safely, make sure your doctor documents it in your chart.

    Bipolar I vs. Bipolar II

The government does not care which subtype you have. A person with Bipolar II who experiences deep, long-lasting depressive episodes can build just as strong a case as someone with Bipolar I who has manic episodes requiring hospitalization.

    Common Reasons for Denial

The HurdleWhy It Ruins a ClaimHow to Prevent It
Treatment GapsStopping therapy makes the SSA assume your condition has improved or isn't severe.See your mental health provider consistently, even on your "good" weeks.
Stopping MedicationThe SSA generally expects you to follow prescribed treatment to qualify. If you stopped taking a drug due to bad side effects or high costs, tell your doctor so they can write the exact reason in your chart.
Earning Too MuchWorking and earning over the limit triggers an automatic technical denial. In 2026, keep your monthly work earnings below $1,690 while your application is pending.

What to Do If You Are Denied

Do not panic if your initial application is rejected; Many mental health claims that are denied initially go on to be approved at the hearing stage, often once additional evidence (an updated RFC, more treatment history, or expert testimony) is added to the file.

Proving a bipolar disorder claim comes down to organizing your evidence before you apply. Ready to take the next step? Use our tools to find programs you may qualify for, or check out our SSDI Evidence Checklist Builder.
