Healthcare and Medicaid questions in California
California expanded Medicaid, so adults under 65 with household income up to 138% of the federal poverty level qualify regardless of whether they have children. Children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities qualify at higher income levels. There is no enrollment period for Medicaid — you can apply at any time.
Apply through California's Medicaid agency online, by phone, or in person at a local office. You can also apply through HealthCare.gov, which routes your application to California. In many cases the same application covers SNAP and cash assistance. Coverage can be retroactive up to three months before your application if you had medical bills and were eligible then.
Medicaid in California covers doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care, lab work, X-rays, prescriptions, preventive care, and long-term care services. Federal rules require coverage of these core benefits in every state. Children enrolled in Medicaid receive comprehensive dental, vision, and hearing coverage. Adult benefits vary more from state to state.

Unemployment questions in California
File a claim with California's unemployment agency as soon as you lose work. The Department of Labor's site at unemployment.gov routes you to California's filing portal. You will need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and the names, addresses, and employment dates for every employer from the past 18 months. After filing, you must certify weekly or biweekly.
Weekly benefits in California range from $40 to $450. Your amount is based on wages earned during your base period, typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters. Most states replace roughly half of prior weekly wages up to the maximum. These figures are effective as of January 2026.
California provides 14–26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits within a benefit year. The exact number depends on your earnings history, and some states reduce available weeks when the state unemployment rate is low. Extended benefits may become available during periods of high unemployment.
You generally qualify if you lost your job through no fault of your own, earned enough wages during your base period to establish a claim, and are able to work, available for work, and actively seeking it. Quitting voluntarily or being fired for misconduct usually disqualifies you, though quitting for certain good causes may still qualify.
