IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION
WHAT DOES THE VA USE TO DECIDE
MY DISABILITY RATINGS
What if I have more than one disability?
The VA uses the “whole person theory” method to determine your combined disability rating. This ensures your total rating doesn’t exceed 100%.
How do ratings work for a disability I had before service that got worse because of service?
If you receive benefits for a pre-service disability that worsened due to your service, the compensation amount is based on the “level of aggravation.” This refers to how much worse your condition became because of military service.
For example, a pre-service illness (something you had before joining) rated 10% disabling becomes 20% disabling due to service. The level of aggravation would be 10%.
