IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION

  • Accuracy of Information: The more accurate the information you enter, the more precise the estimate will be. Ensure your disability ratings are up-to-date and correct.
  • VA’s Rating System: The VA uses a complex system for combining disability ratings. For example, two 50% disabilities don’t combine to 100%, but create a lower combined rating.
  • Changing Rates: VA compensation rates can change annually. The calculator reflects current rates, but it is important to stay informed about potential changes.
  • Disclaimer: This calculator provides estimates only and does not guarantee specific benefits.
  • Professional Advice: It is always recommended that you consult with a VA representative or a veterans’ advocate for detailed and personalized advice.

WHAT DOES THE VA USE TO DECIDE
MY DISABILITY RATINGS

  • The evidence you provide: This includes doctor’s reports, medical test results, and other relevant documentation.
  • The results of your VA claim exam (C&P exam): The VA may schedule this exam to assess your condition.
  • Other information from different sources: This could include records from federal agencies.

What if I have more than one disability?

The VA uses the “whole person theory” method to determine your combined disability rating. This ensures your total rating doesn’t exceed 100%.

How do ratings work for a disability I had before service that got worse because of service?

If you receive benefits for a pre-service disability that worsened due to your service, the compensation amount is based on the “level of aggravation.” This refers to how much worse your condition became because of military service.
For example, a pre-service illness (something you had before joining) rated 10% disabling becomes 20% disabling due to service. The level of aggravation would be 10%.
