VA Back Pay Calculator
VA back pay is the money the VA owes you for months you waited on a decision. It runs from your effective date to the date your claim is decided. This VA disability back pay calculator estimates that amount and the change in your monthly pay if your rating goes up.

What this tool does
- • Uses the same 2026 VA pay rates as our VA Disability Pay Calculator
- • Counts months between your effective date and the decision date
- • Shows how the next rating step may change your pay
What this tool does not do
- • Does not use older years' pay rates, so real back pay may differ
- • Does not decide your rating or effective date. Only the VA can
- • Does not file an appeal for you
How VA Back Pay Is Calculated
If an appeal raises your rating, the VA may owe you the difference between your old and new monthly pay for each month since your effective date. The effective date is often tied to when you first filed, or when your Intent to File was received.
Filing on time protects that date. The VA says filing a Supplemental Claim within 1 year of your decision letter keeps your effective date, and a Higher-Level Review or Board Appeal must be filed within that year.
This estimator multiplies your monthly difference by the number of months between your effective date and the decision date, using 2026 VA rates. For example, in 2026 a Veteran alone is paid $3,938.58 a month at 100%. Real back pay uses the rate for each year, so treat the result as an estimate.
