Effective Date
The date from which a VA disability rating or benefit is effective, determining how far back retroactive payments go. Generally, this is the date the VA received the original claim.
The effective date can be as early as the day after discharge if the claim is filed within one year of separation. Filing an Intent to File (ITF) preserves an earlier effective date while you gather evidence.
Errors in assigning the effective date are a common basis for CUE (Clear and Unmistakable Error) claims.
→ An earlier effective date can result in significant retroactive back pay.

Frequently asked questions about Effective Date
What does 'Effective Date' mean for VA benefits?+
The VA 'Effective Date' is the day your disability rating or benefit starts. This date is important because it decides how far back your retroactive payments will go. Usually, it's the date the VA first got your claim.
How does the Effective Date affect my VA payments?+
Your Effective Date tells the VA when to start counting your benefit payments. If your claim is approved, you might get a lump sum for all the time between your Effective Date and when the VA starts paying you regularly. This is called retroactive pay.
Can my Effective Date be changed?+
Sometimes, your Effective Date can be changed if new information or an appeal shows an earlier date was more appropriate. This can happen if there was a clear error or if you appeal a decision within a certain timeframe and win.
Why is the Effective Date so important for my VA claim?+
The Effective Date is very important because it sets the start of your VA benefits. A small difference in this date can mean a big difference in how much back pay you receive. Getting this date right helps you get all the benefits you deserve.
