Presumptive Condition
A medical condition the VA automatically assumes was caused by military service for veterans who meet specific criteria, waiving the normal requirement to prove a direct service connection.
Examples include: certain cancers and illnesses for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange; Gulf War illnesses; conditions covered by the PACT Act (burn pit exposure). The PACT Act (2022) dramatically expanded the list of presumptive conditions for post-9/11 veterans. You still need a current diagnosis and an in-service event — the 'nexus' requirement is presumed.
→ Even if your condition is presumptive, you still need to file a claim and provide your diagnosis.
