**Creditable coverage** is health insurance or prescription drug coverage that Medicare considers at least as good as its own. Maintaining creditable coverage lets you **delay Medicare Part B or Part D enrollment without owing a Late Enrollment Penalty (LEP)** when you eventually sign up.

**Part B creditable coverage** generally means group health insurance based on **current active employment** — your own job or your spouse's. **COBRA, retiree coverage, VA health care, TRICARE, and Marketplace plans are NOT creditable for Part B** for the purposes of avoiding the Part B late penalty.

**Part D creditable coverage** is prescription drug coverage that is at least as generous as Medicare's standard Part D benefit. Employer plans, retiree plans, VA pharmacy benefits, and TRICARE prescription coverage are usually creditable — but the employer must notify you in writing each year.

Employers and plan sponsors are required to send a **Notice of Creditable Coverage** to Medicare-eligible members every September. **Keep these letters** — when you eventually enroll in Medicare, you may need to show them to SSA to prove you had creditable coverage during the gap, which avoids the LEP.

When you do switch from creditable coverage to Medicare, you'll generally have an **8-month Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for Part B** and a **63-day SEP for Part D** to sign up without penalty.

Frequently asked questions about Creditable Coverage (Medicare)

Is COBRA creditable coverage for Medicare?+

No — COBRA is not creditable for Part B. Enrolling in or relying on COBRA after age 65 does NOT extend your Part B enrollment window and can trigger a permanent 10%-per-year Part B Late Enrollment Penalty.

Is VA health care creditable for Part D?+

Yes. VA pharmacy benefits are considered creditable prescription drug coverage. Veterans using VA pharmacy are not required to enroll in Part D and will not face a Part D LEP if they later do.

How do I prove I had creditable coverage?+

Keep the annual Notice of Creditable Coverage letter your employer or plan sends each September, and ask your former employer for written confirmation of coverage dates when you leave the plan.

What happens if I lose creditable coverage?+

You get an 8-month Special Enrollment Period for Part B and a 63-day Special Enrollment Period for Part D to sign up without late penalties. Enroll early in the window to avoid a coverage gap.

Is Marketplace (ACA) coverage creditable for Medicare?+

No. ACA Marketplace plans are not considered creditable for Medicare Part B. If you stay on a Marketplace plan past age 65 instead of enrolling in Medicare, you will likely face a Part B Late Enrollment Penalty.
